<pre>!Help file for <a href="http://www.dacha.freeuk.com/free/">!Jack</a>

!Jack is designed to repair JPEGs where up to the first 150
bytes of the header may have become corrupt.

It is also useful for extracting a single JPEG embedded in
another file.

You may come across files designed for a PC viewer, perhaps
with the file extension .wbz or .fcgi, where the JPEG is not
only held inside the file but the first 100 bytes are
encrypted. !Jack will be able to extract a JPEG from most of
these files.

I am confident that no user would dream of utilising !Jack
to infringe any copyright laws and even if they do then I am
in no way to blame.

!Jack will extract only the last JPEG in a file. This is
useful if the file contains an embedded thumbnail image
because the main image is usually after the thumbnail.

Will !Jack repair or recover every JPEG?
========================================

!Jack will only be able to extract and restore any JPEG
which conforms to a fairly standard format and is intact
after the first 150 bytes or so. Even then, it can only
restore standard tables. If non-standard tables were used,
the JPEG that !Jack produces may not be quite the same as
the original. What is most likely to suffer is the gamma and
contrast settings, so the image might appear faint or dark,
or seem garish. In most cases there should be little or no
difference.

What to do
==========

Just run !Jack by double clicking over the icon in the Filer
window. Its icon will appear on the icon bar. Now drop the
file containing the embedded or corrupt JPEG on to the icon
bar icon.

If !Jack encounters any problems, it will probably display
an error message.

If !Jack can extract a JPEG, it will try to save it with the
same name as the input file but with a '/jpg' extension.

You can also drop a selection of several files onto the icon
bar icon. The Filer will send their names one at a time to
!Jack and all will be processed.

Users of a version of RISC OS before 4.0 should ensure the
directory is not full and that the input file name is less
than 10 characters.

IF IN ANY DOUBT, KEEP A BACKUP COPY OF THE FILE.
